The short version
  • The dataset measures 35,545,714 international tourist arrivals to Thailand in 2024; it is national arrivals data, not ThailandHop traffic or a count of unique people.
  • Its top five source markets were China, Malaysia, India, South Korea, Russia. The ranking is explicitly tied to 2024, not presented as a live league table.
  • ThailandHop remains English-first. The researched non-English roadmap is Chinese (Simplified), Russian, Korean, Japanese; these are priorities, not claims that translations already exist.
  • Every market record carries a metric, geography, year, confidence and source. Estimates of language reach are labelled as estimates rather than visitor counts.

What the dataset measures

Lovecity's Inbound research uses the Thailand Ministry of Tourism and Sports full-year 2024 nationality table. The denominator is 35,545,714 international tourist arrivals at country level. An arrival is a border crossing for a trip, not a unique person, hotel guest or overnight stay, and the data does not describe ThailandHop's own readership.

Keeping metric and geography visible matters. Land-border trips from neighbouring countries sit in the same national arrivals table as long-haul holidays, so a market's share does not automatically equal its appetite for an English-language travel guide. We use the profile for audience and localisation decisions, not as a proxy for individual reader behaviour.

Largest source markets in the 2024 profile

In the 2024 full-year dataset, the five largest recorded source markets were China (18.94%), Malaysia (13.93%), India (5.99%), South Korea (5.26%), Russia (4.91%). These shares all use the same national-arrivals denominator and year.

The full snapshot contains 15 markets with source notes and confidence fields. It is intentionally versioned: later years can reorder the table, and a clean historical profile should not be silently relabelled as current data.

  • #1 China: 6,733,162 arrivals · 18.94% · high confidence
  • #2 Malaysia: 4,952,078 arrivals · 13.93% · high confidence
  • #3 India: 2,129,149 arrivals · 5.99% · high confidence
  • #4 South Korea: 1,868,945 arrivals · 5.26% · high confidence
  • #5 Russia: 1,745,327 arrivals · 4.91% · high confidence
  • #6 Laos: 1,124,202 arrivals · 3.16% · high confidence

What it means for languages

English remains the base language because it serves long-haul English-speaking markets, English-defaulting outbound travellers and much of maritime Southeast Asia. The research estimates English reach rather than claiming universal comprehension; the estimate is not an analytics measurement.

The non-English priority order is Chinese (Simplified), Russian, Korean, Japanese. Simplified Chinese leads because the 2024 China market was large and English proficiency is a weak fallback; Russian, Korean and Japanese follow on a combination of volume and language need. ThailandHop has not yet shipped those locales, so no hreflang or translated-page claim is made until real translations exist.

Limits, freshness and how we use it

The profile uses the latest clean full year available to the research run, and the ministry file was preliminary. It also notes that Malaysia moved ahead of China in 2025, so the 2024 order must not be described as today's ranking. Border-heavy markets can be overrepresented relative to guide-reading leisure demand, while language reach necessarily remains an estimate.

We use this research to decide where localisation and accessibility work could add the most value. Article facts still require their own subject-specific sources; an arrivals table cannot prove a visa rule, transport schedule or destination claim. When a newer clean annual table is adopted, the snapshot, year labels and conclusions should be updated together.
