Around party night on Phangan's Haad Rin beach, huge numbers of people cross from Samui and the other islands, ferries sell out, prices firm up, and operators lay on special late-night and early-morning sailings to carry the crowds back. If your trip coincides with the party — or if you're going specifically for it — book your crossings ahead, expect queues, and plan how and when you'll get back before you go over, because the return is where people come unstuck.

Even on an ordinary day, mind which Samui pier you use. Different ferry companies depart from different piers around the island, so the 'best' boat is the one leaving from whichever pier is easiest to reach from your Samui base — there's little point saving a few baht on a fare if you spend it on a long taxi to a far pier. Check the departure pier when you book, not just the time.

And on any crossing, know the last boat. Scheduled sailings stop in the evening outside party periods, so if you're day-tripping to Phangan or coming back late from a beach, confirm the final return time so you're not stranded overnight by accident.
